Various Artists - Classic Country Music - A Smithsonian Collection 4 CD Box Set

    [1991 / CD / FLAC / Lossless / Log]

    From AllMusic:

An absolutely indispensable series, Smithsonian's Classic
Country line of discs covers the music with great care and
historical savvy. On par with their excellent jazz collection,
Smithsonian's Classic Country Music series takes in the
highlights from the early string band days of the Carter Family
and the rise of honky tonk to the Nashville sound and the
crossover sounds of the '80s. Spread over four discs with
close to 25 tracks a disc, the series offers country newcomers
    an ideal place to start.

The first volume kicks things off with 25 tracks ranging from
early string band sides [Gid Tanner & His Skillet Lickers] and
the first country classics [the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers],
to the mountain genius of Roy Acuff and popular cowboy-centric
hits by Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, and the Sons of the Pioneers.
And hinting at things to come, the collection wraps things up
with a taste of Bob Wills' Western swing and Ernest Tubb's early
honky tonk. So, from the '20s through the '40s, and with a bevy
of milestones to hear along the way, this ride through hillbilly
history is not to be missed.

Vol. 2 has a good cross-section of honky tonk, cowboy and
traditional country cuts from the '50s, including tracks from
Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, Webb Pierce, Al Dexter, Moon
Mullican, Gene Autry, Hank Thompson, Floyd Tillman, and Left
    Frizzell.

Vol. 3 takes up the story in the mid-'50s, as rock & roll was
starting to make waves. The first half covers the latter days
of honky tonk with hits by Ray Price and Johnny Horton, not to
mention a few nods to theSun Records milieu by way of some
Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash. The disc proceeds to take in
most of the '60s, including early country-pop [Jim Reeves and
Patsy Cline], the Bakersfield sound [Buck Owens], mega hits
[Bobbie Gentry and Roger Miller], and two of the music's
strongest female voices [Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette]. A
fine taste of country before the producers really started
jockeying for the crossover dollar and lost sight of those
    honky tonk roots.

Vol 4 covers the music from the last days of the Nashville
sound up through the nouveau honky tonk of the early '70 and
the rock and pop-tinged, chart topping likes of Alabama, the
Judds, and Charlie Daniels. Also included, the original alt
country of Gram Parsons, a bit of honky tonk revival by Dwight
Yoakam, and a genuine pop smash from Dolly Parton. As usual,
the Smithsonian has produced a quality collection, in spite of
the often conflicting demands of historical brevity and
commercial recognition. And while some of the later material
falls short, the disc mostly stays on track thanks to a little
help from George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Lefty Frizzell, and
Loretta Lynn. A history lesson for the tavern set
